So if you come up on a big cougar, or how about a bear,
how would you handle it?!

First, I would probably urinate myself. Then I'd try to look bigger than I am and make lots of noise to scare it off. ...If my voice would work.

Badly - I'm not good with confrontation.

I've read conflicting advice over the best immediate course of action, though the cougar response is usually to look big and shout (unless they're with cubs), but I understand that certain preferred tactics regarding bears can be fatal at different times of year, and with different species.

However, I think my initial reaction would be the same as most people, which would be to stand glued to the spot with a mouth like the Mohave; but providing you take stock of the situation at the same time, I've always considered this to be your body's natural instinct for self-preservation, as it'll probably give you the best chance.

And then rely on current local knowledge and advice every time.

Incidentally, the advice for dealing with Polar Bears is to hide somewhere warm. I understand Bermuda is a popular choice.

I would bend their toenails/claws back until they yelled uncle.

OK I did come upon a bear this June in the Smokys. I paused and tried to grab my camera and he ran away. That said, if I would have had a problem I would have barked like a big dog. They use Pit Bulls in the south to hunt bears and everyone I ran into on the AT that had a bear encounter used that technique to scare them away. It it were a cougar I would use a yoga technique to bend over and kiss my ass goodbye.
Well, maybe I would try to make myself look big swinging my hiking poles and bark like a big dog. I would also show them a picture of my Mother-In-Law. If all else fails I would play them a recording of my wife on one of her NAGGING RAMPAGES.
The Flyingfishman- He's sort of like Dick Proenneke... with a lot more friends.

Man, I don't know how I would handle it. I know it probably isn't right to have a gun out there with you, however if you know how to use it and are safe with it, I would say bring that. Especially if you are going to be out there for an extended period of time. I'm talking to you Grizzly Man.
