So, I was wondering what all you racers eat for breakfast (if anything) before a big race (running, biking, whatever)?

We are going to do the General Butler Tri next month, and we'll be camping the night before, the race starts at 10:00 A.M.

Any tips and/or tricks for fueling up before the race without cramping up?

I usually try to carb load the night before, then eat some oatmeal and a energy bar about an hour or two before racing. That works for me. The only thing I have done that I regret is trying to drink too much water or sports drink in the morning. Most of your hydration needs to take place the night before. Good luck at the race, I would give it a go If I could swim that far. I will probably go to the Capital View Race in Frankfort that day.

Ditto what abenson said. I usually eat oatmeal a few hours before the race and a power bar 30 min to an hour before. I also carry some power gel to gulp down during a race.

Breakfast is eaten at least 90 minutes before racing, and is normally a bowl of porage, frequently with a sliced banana.

If it's a really full-on raceday, and a bit summer-y for a hot bowl, throw porridge oats (or muesli, or shredded wheat) in a blender with milk and bananas, and drink like a shake. We've found this to be a surefire way of getting double the calories in half the time (and importantly without any "repetition" problems).

I find that I am almost always away from home when going to a race, so I have adopted a travel program for breakfast on race-day. I purchase some whole-grain muffins from my local organic coop, which are made with oatmeal, flax, fruit, etc. . . I scarf one or two of those no later than 2 hours before the gun. Chase those down with a Naked brand fruit smoothy, which is all natural and has lots of complex and simple sugar. Followed by coffee, so that you can empty out before you get to the start line.

The coffee is very important - do not forget the coffee.

i like the coffee idea. nothing worse than a stomach cramp because of "movement" during the race.
